Rheumatic fever and the ‘art of governance’

Rationalising certain health matters as individual, rather than as social, deflects responsibility from the government onto citizens. This transference of responsibility through the sticker chart requires that citizens voluntarily govern themselves, enacting what Foucault calls ‘governmentality’.

Foucault and Santa’s Panopticon

Santa is visible and unverifiable, children are unaware of exactly where he is and when he might be watching, making him an effective tool in modifying children’s behaviours. This captures the processes of panopticism that Foucault describes in Discipline and Punish.

Do Student Loans Produce Docile Bodies?

Foucault discusses a change in the method of discipline as “Discipline is no longer simply an art of distributing bodies, of extracting time from them and accumulating it, but of composing forces in order to obtain an efficient machine” (Foucault, 1979, p. 164). This theory can be applied to the mass debt that students acquire through their student loans.
